Welcome to the |
Herdla is an island off the northern side of the island of Askøy just 35 km and a 45-minute drive from the centre of Bergen. At Laxeneset, an idyllic area of natural beauty covering just over 4 acres, we have three summer cottages and two apartments for rent. Boats can be hired and the waters around Herdla offer excellent fishing, the most common species being saithe, cod, mackerel, pollack, ling and monkfish. Crab stocks are high and ocean fishing tours can be organised.

| Just north of Laxeneset is Valen. The landscape is unique, with large expanses of flat land and wonderful sandy beaches interspersed with fantastic pebble beaches. The area's marshland is rich in birdlife, with over 200 different species recorded. Herdla has a fascinating past. Finds of Stone Age tools show that the area has been inhabited for 5,000 years. Towards the west the ancient earthworks bear witness to the dramatic events of the Migration Period 450800 AD. Herdla Gård is a large farm by Norwegian standards, with 250 head of cattle, and is one of Norway's largest dairy producers. The farm was a royal manor back in the time of Harald Finehair.

| The original Herdla church dated from the twelfth century. Over the centuries it has suffered the ravages of fire and storms and during the war it was used as a storehouse. The church in its present form dates from 1951. |
